You will here find a basic configuration for AIR-CAP 1602E-E-K9 access point managed by Wireless Controller that connected to 4-port EHWIC card inserted into Cisco 1941 ISR G2 modular router. Orgianlly I was trying to configure this access point without WLC but then realized that it is impossible. However the valuable troubleshooting steps have been recorded here.

Connecting Light Weight Access Point without WLC

I connected AIR-CAP 1602E-E-K9 access point to EtherSwitch card on Cisco 1941 ISR G2 but because it does not have WLC capability it is not possible to manage AP. The output below, I have left just for future reference that could help to configure Router and APs when WLC is available.

Configure DHPC server to allow AP discover WLC

DHCP pool has been configured on the router
ip dhcp pool SW-POOL
 network 172.16.0.0 255.255.0.0
 default-router 172.16.0.1
 dns-server 8.8.4.4
option 43 hex f108.ac10.0001 '<-- WLC ip address in hex, f108 is always there ac10.0001 it actual ip address
option 60 ascii "Cisco AP c1600" '<-- double quotes are required closing VCI string--'
 lease 0 2

Where is AP management? is WLC missing on ISR G2 routers?

SRE is needed to provide WLC functionality. You can read more about it following this link Cisco Services-Ready Engine. It is worth it to mention that Cisco 1941 ISR G2 router can support only 1x Cisco SRE Internal Services Module (ISM).

These applications but not limited are supported on Cisco SRE Modules
  • Network services: Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC), Infoblox Core Network Services, Cisco Prime™ Network Analysis Module (NAM), NetScout nGenius Integrated Agent, BlueCat Adonis DNS/DHCP and Proteus IPAM, LogLogic MX-Virtual Appliance, Visual Network Systems OmniPoint Element, Uplogix Local Management Platform
  • Application services: Cisco Wide Area Application Services (WAAS), Cisco UCS Express, Cisco Application Extension Platform (AXP)
  • Security: Cisco Video Surveillance, SecureLogix Voice Policy Firewall
